Highlighting Found Items

Jason Wong's blog has an interesting piece on locating searched-for items in a browser window. He compares Firefox and Safari. The attentional capture features of the Safari browser are neat. Maybe this idea could be adapted for other purposes such as IM notification in the periphery with large screens?

Some good comments! However, rapid and repeated (if the user searches a lot) changes of contrast, brightness of a screen may cause problems in maintaining the overall presentation and memory of the webpage. It is possible that users will feel it's obtrusive. But we need *data* to suggest! :)

I think dims the entire page and highlight the key word is pretty creative, since we are really sensitive to changes. I remembered that we have discussed this before, high contrast made the visual search task easier. Also, by introducing a blur method, or a moving object as a cue may be even better, but that may cost a problem of using too much system resources.
